How can I remove the Specularity (reflection ) from an image?

i have a project and i am in need to remove the Specularity (reflection ) from a set of images using matlab.

The best way to do this is to use a polarizer in front of the camera.

In software it's much harder. You'd have to find the shine, perhaps by assuming certain intensity profiles and colors, then estimate what the profile would be without the shine.
