UGLY figure text on a Mac - anti-aliasing possible?

Is there any way to get figure text to display properly, with anti-aliasing, on a mac? How is it that so little effort has been put into making figures look good on this platform? Just switched from Windows to Mac. Don't want to be switching from MATLAB to Python as well...

Please check to see which font you are using. True-type fonts should look better.
