How to edit fig files

I would like to make global changes to variable names (in tags and callbacks) in fig files. Is this possible? I can do it in the corresponding m file but that is useless unless I can do so in the fig file I have created with GUIDE. It is too slow to have to make all the name changes using Property Inspector. The ability to do so would make code more reusable.
