SERIAL function failing in 64-bit Matlab

The serial function on Matlab-2010b-64bit for Windows 7 (64bit) is not working properly. The function is able to open 'COM1' and external RS232 data does stream into Matlab. However, the data is mixed with random characters and spaces.
The same exact serial function works perfectly fine on Matlab-2010b-32bit on both Windows XP and Windows 7 platforms.
I also tried 2011b-64bit, but the same problem persists.
Is there a setting I need to set for 64bit Matlab? Is there a patch to fix this problem? Thank you.

Does Mathworks recommend a specific serial card?
