data acquisition from NI DAQ

I'm trying to collect data via ethernet from an NI compact-DAQ. I have data acquisition toolbox, and DAQmx drivers installed. I can see my device in NI MAX, but when I do
daq.getDevices
in Matlab, it says no devices are found. I've tried
daqreset
and restarting the machine, and making sure the device isn't reserved in NI MAX.
The odd thing is this problem seems to be intermittent. Sometimes I am able to collect with my device just fine. Any help is appreciated!
