When dealing with thresholding, what does it mean when we come to the following terms: - contrasting object - contrasting background

It means that the foreground objects look different than the background, especially meaning their intensity levels. I'm not sure why you're confused. Why is that not obvious? Am I overlooking some nuance that you had in mind?
