Hello,
I am using the code below to create a map of Ireland. I found this code online.
I am just wondering apart from land, is there other options that you can load into the map such as topographic information or the names of towns and cities. Is there a list of options?
ax = worldmap('ireland');
land = shaperead('landareas', 'UseGeoCoords', true);
geoshow(ax, land, 'FaceColor', [0.5 0.7 0.5])
Thank you

Hello,
No there is no particular reason, except I believe there is a steep learning curve with GIS packages and what I want to do is relatively simple.
All I want to do is plot some GPS points on a map showing the locations of objects. My biggest problem is that I don't know where to source maps with detail from.
Here is an example of what I am trying to achieve. I believe this image was created in matlab. Would you know where the author sources a map like this? Well it is a google map but how did he get it into matlab?
Appreciate any suggestions?

Such data often comes incorporated with most popular GIS packages. There are a ton of online sources. Google is your friend. If you have the mapping toolbox in Matlab, then you can connect to a multitude of map servers. There are very many. I encourage you to read the documentation for the mapping toolbox, you will find some examples there. There is a learning curve to Matlab also, and it is, imo, not the best tool for this job.
