How to ensure all figures are the same size/format when exported (e.g. to JPEG, not printed) using Matlab R2007b?

Dear All,
I have a dissertation with 12 figures, and I need them to come out at a standardized size and format, with the axes square. Basically, I need the figures to be composed such that all axes, axis labels and the title (as well as surrounding whitespace) are positioned identically so that they look good when two figures are lined up next to one another on a page.
The figures are going to be inserted mid-text, so printing them to pdf isn't really a useful option. JPEG or PNG or EPS would be fine.
I already know how to square the axes, adjust font sizes, etc. But whenever I do this, I keep getting figures that come out in different sizes, and then they look misaligned when inserted into my document and scaled to be the same height.
Thanks for your help, Tom

First stop in any non-trivial output problem should be to try out Oliver's export_fig MATLAB File Exchange contribution.
