Using Arduino as an input device

Hello,

I wanted to write a code on matlab that starts a recording on the press of a switch and stops again as the switch is released. I wanted to use the arduino board as the hardware that inputs some kind of a signal which tells matlab to start recording and again to stop. Is it possible? How can the Matlab read such input? Appreciate your help.
