dot in an expression

Hi guys. What does the dot in sinc(x) = sin(x)./x do? Remove a singularity or what?

Compare the following
x = magic(3)
x = 3×3
8 1 6 3 5 7 4 9 2
sin(x)/x % matrix division
ans = 3×3
0.0997 -0.1770 0.1807 0.0666 0.0824 -0.1597 -0.1543 0.2902 -0.0983
sin(x)./x % element-wise division
ans = 3×3
0.1237 0.8415 -0.0466 0.0470 -0.1918 0.0939 -0.1892 0.0458 0.4546
