How to select an object(e.g., a point or a line) in axes

Hi all, I meet a problem that has troubled me for several days. Everyone that could serve for the solutions is greatly appreciated.
My problem is: assume there is one axes in GUI and both several points and several lines are contained in this axes, now I want to select a point/line by clicking the mouse button on it(the point/line) and then highlight the selected point/line, also I want to display the attributes of the selected point/line in an uitable control. Could anyone tell me how to implement it? Thanks a lot! Wish for the answers from you.
