How can I create a program that calculates the surface area and approximate perimeter of an irregular image using GUI?

Basically as part of a small lab at university; I have to create an program that calculates the surface area and perimeter of an irregular image. The program must read in a image file and display it.

I'm just wondering if anyone could help me grasp more of an idea of how to make such a program as i'm new to using Matlab. any help would be much appreciated. Thanks
