How can I assign selected iris image to a variable before verification with other images in the image file?

I am creating an iris recognition system. I saved iris images in a file. Now I need to identify a specific person using a given iris image. Thus, to code it I still don't know how to assign that new image to a variable before feature extraction and all.

What do you mean by "assign the new image to a variable"? Are you able to get the saved images imported into MATLAB? The saved images and the new one are not using the same file format?
