Why am I unable to clear the command window in MATLAB 7.0 (R14) if I start it from Microsoft Excel and then launch the desktop?

I start MATLAB 7.0 (R14) from Microsoft Excel, which will launch MATLAB in the nodesktop configuration. I then use the command:
desktop
to start the Java-based desktop. If I try to use the CLC command to clear the command window, it is not cleared.

This enhancement has been incorporated in Release 14 Service Pack 3 (R14SP3).
To work around this issue in previous product releases, start a separate MATLAB session instead of using the session of MATLAB started from Excel.
