I would like to know which version of the Maple kernel the Symbolic Math Toolbox uses.

The Symbolic Math Toolbox in MATLAB 6.0 (R12) through MATLAB 6.5 (R13) is based on the kernel for Maple V Release 4. The Symbolic Math Toolbox included with the Student Version of MATLAB 6.5 (R13) and the web-release version of the Symbolic Math Toolbox (3.0.1 and higher versions) are based on the kernel for Maple 8.
If you have the Extended Symbolic Toolbox, you can verify this by using the following two commands at the MATLAB prompt:
maple kernelopts version
maple interface version
