Why does MATLAB 7.0.1 (R14SP1) show the splash screen and then hang when running Red Hat Linux 9 on a dual Intel Xeon system?

When I try to start MATLAB 7.0.1 (R14SP1) on my system, I see the splash screen, but MATLAB does not start.

This issue is caused by an incompatibility between Red Hat Linux 9 and MATLAB 7.0.1 (R14SP1). To work around this issue, ensure that you have the most recent updates installed for your Red Hat Linux 9 installation. You can obtain updates from the Red Hat Web site:
NOTE: This issue has not been reported in release 14SP2 and 14SP3.
