The following instructions provide the process for manual activation of a Student license through the MathWorks website. Please note that you cannot download offline installation files for a MATLAB Student license. Contact MathWorks Customer Support if you need to install MATLAB Student on a machine which is NOT connected to the internet.
In order to proceed, you will need the Host ID and Login Name for the machine where MATLAB is installed.
What is a Host ID? How do I find my Host ID in order to activate my license?
How do I find my computer username in order to activate my license?
Once you have the Host ID:
  • Log into your MathWorks Account (www.mathworks.com/login)
  • Navigate to the License Center (www.mathworks.com/licensecenter)
  • Click on the License Number and switch to the 'Install and Activate' tab
  • Under Related Tasks to the right, click "Activate to Retrieve License File"
  • Select the Release & Operating System from the drop down menus
  • Enter your Host ID
  • Enter your Computer Login Name (if applicable)
  • Enter an Activation Label of your choice
  • Click the 'Continue' button
  • Choose to download or email the license file
Lastly, the license file has to be manually placed inside the licenses directory. The location of the licenses directory varies between operating systems:
Windows
License files are stored in the "licenses" folder within the MATLAB installation folder. If MATLAB is installed in the default location, license files are stored here:
C:\Program Files\MATLAB\R20XXx\licenses
Instead of "R20XXx" the folder will correspond with the release of MATLAB you have installed. Save the license file in here.
macOS
License files are stored inside the MATLAB application package:
  • Right click, CTRL-click, or two-finger click on the MATLAB icon in your Applications folder
  • Select "Show Package Contents."
  • In the MATLAB application package, open the "licenses" folder and save the license.lic file in here.
Linux
The license files are stored in the MATLAB installation directory:
$MATLAB/licenses
For example, if MATLAB is installed in the default directory:
/usr/local/MATLAB/R20XXx/licenses
Instead of "R20XXx" the folder will correspond with the release of MATLAB you have installed. Save the license file in here.
