Why is FDATool GUI not opening when running MATLAB 7.6 (R2008a) through a VNC client?

I am running MATLAB 7.6 (R2008a) through a VNC connection on 64-bit SuSE 9.x Linux. When I am trying to open the FDATool GUI by typing 'fdatool' in the Command Window, most of the times it opens up a new window and starts to load, but abruptly closes with no errors. This does not happen for every VNC session. If the FDATool did not open, I seem to be able to work around this by running the command with the -logfile option.

The ability to run MATLAB through a VNC connection is not officially supported on MATLAB 7.8 (R2009a) or any prior versions. MATLAB will however oftentimes work, but reports of GUI-related issues have been reported.
Our best recommendation is that you try another VNC client, or in this particular case, try starting FDATool with the -logfile option.
