Why does ZOOM followed by PAN on a polar plot create a slight rotation of the view azimuth?

If I first zoom in on polar plot using the ZOOM function and then pan the plot using the PAN function, the graph will pan but azimuth shifts slightly, causing a rotation.

This enhancement has been incorporated in Release 2006a (R2006a). For previous product releases, read below for any possible workarounds:
The PAN command behaves strangely when used in conjunction with the VIEW command. Also, the ZOOM function alters the current view of the plot.
The main source of confusion is that any axes which does not have the view set to [0,90] (the canonical 2-D view) is treated as a 3-D plot.
