Why can't I read the PDF documentation through the Helpdesk in MATLAB 6.1 (R12.1) under Windows?

I open up the MATLAB Helpdesk by going to "MATLAB Help" in the Help menu, then I use the link to go to the PDF printable versions of the documentation. When I click on a PDF document link, though, MATLAB says that I need to have a PDF viewer installed to view PDF files. I have Adobe Acrobat already set up and working in Internet Explorer, so I would like to know why it does not work in the Helpdesk.

This problem has been corrected in MATLAB 6.5 (R13).
In MATLAB 6.1 (R12.1), the method used to determine the location of the PDF reader software was changed from the method used in MATLAB 6.0 (R12). Installing Adobe Acrobat does not set up the flag which MATLAB uses to determine the location of the reader.
We recommend downloading and installing the free Acrobat Reader from the Adobe website,
which does set that flag.
