Description

In this work, results of different wavelet-based image compression and segmentation based wavelet image compression are presented. The effects of different wavelet functions, filter orders, number of decompositions are examined. The final choice of optimal wavelets in wavelet based image compression are bior2.2 (high compression ratio) and bior3.3 (high SNR). The choice of optimal wavelets in segmentation based wavelet image compression are bior2.2 for low frequency component and bior5.5 for high frequency component(high compression ratio) or bior3.3 for low frequency component and bior6.6 for high frequency component(high SNR).  
 
Optimal number of decomposition level for wavelet based image compression is 3 and for low frequency component in segmentation based wavelet image compression is 2 and for high frequency component is 11. The two techniques wavelet based image compression and segmentation based wavelet image compression are compared. Finally concluded as the segmentation based wavelet image compression gives improvement in both SNR and compression ratio compared to wavelet based image compression.
