This GUI-based MATLAB package was written to make it easy to quickly extract geometric measurements such as the GSA (geometric surface area), length, and diameter from SEM images of conical microelectrodes, particularly Utah electrode arrays (UEA, Blackrock Microsystems, Salt Lake City, UT). The user can choose from two different models to approximate the shape of a conical electrode: simple frustum (flat-topped cone) or spline (more accurate estimation of the edge of an electrode). The size and shape of UEAs varies greatly regardless of part number, with little consistency in dimensional yield, making it an important consideration for neuroscience researchers using UEAs to include geometric analysis of tip variance within their results. The geometric size and shape of the electrode tips are also thought to have a measurable effect on the long-term impedance behavior of the UEA array in vivo.
