Unknown Input Observers(UIO) are used in model based FDI schemes to reduce or almost eliminate the effect of unknown disturbances on the plant/system.Further they can be used to generate residuls that are insensitive to unknown disturbances or noise, thus lower the false alarm rate.

For isolation of different faults a bank of UIOs are designed. Each UIO generate residuals which are sensitive to only one fault, thus makes the isolation easier.
