Just started working with MATLAB on June 16, so my code is pretty basic and may not do things in the fastest way possible. I've had experience with Visual Basic, C, and web languages. I work in a lab writing image analysis programs to collect data on the asexual reproduction on planaria.

One quick speed-up would be to listen to the m-lint messages: 'variable changes size in every loop iteration', 'use ||'

It won't affect it too much, but every second counts. Also, line 56 can be done away with.

Another way you could optimize this for speed would be to have a 'default' way to enter the variables that does minimal argument checking, but have it accept other formats if it fails that setup.
