Ah, commenting out line 337 of rtslid.m:

"figure(params.fig);"

eliminates crashes for later versions of Matlab...

Very nifty idea but it crashes quickly in Matlab 2008b, 2009a, and 2009b. There are clearly some GUI incompatibilities.
