Personal Profile:

I love MATLAB. I love teaching people to love MATLAB.

I love it so much that I went to work for the people who make MATLAB. I spend my days at MathWorks creating material to help people learn MATLAB. Life is good.

(My love of teaching MATLAB notwithstanding, please don't email me for help -- post a question to MATLAB Answers instead. Firstly, your email will probably be swallowed by my spam filter. Secondly, private consulting isn't in my job description.)

Thanks for that, Mohammad. Dumb copy-paste error on my part. I've submitted a corrected version.

10 Nov 2011 Simple real Fourier series approximation Computes coefficients for the real Fourier series approximation to a data set. Author: Matt Tearle

The expansion is in terms of sin/cos(kx) for k = 0:n, so the frequencies are simply k/L (for k from 0 to n), where L = max(x) - min(x). The units would be in inverse units of x. In the example given in the description, you can see the dominant contribution from the 4th sine term, which corresponds to a frequency of 4/(2-0) = 2 Hz (if x represented time in seconds).

Thanks for the feedback, too. Glad it could help.

Hi Matt, I was wondering if you might have a chance to include coloring+legend as another dimension. Otherwise... using it every week. Regards Arnold

Hi Matt,
thanks for the function. This is really missing in Matlab.
A couple of thoughts that might make it even better:

1.
The ability to plot the lowest hierarchy/dimension as different box-color, or maybe second y-axis. This is closely related to the second idea:
The ability to plot 2-y axis, differentiated by color as well. Many applications have two different variables you might wanna show.

3. It would be more usable if one could simply feed it a table. The new 'table' data type looks like it would for great with this.
