  • GLG 410: Computers in Geology (Undergraduate 4th year)
This course is designed to teach analytical thinking in geological sciences using computing applications. A variety of tools will be used to study, image, and model geological science information and data. Computer hardware and networking basics are also covered, as well as graphics and visualization tools, including spread sheet programming, curve fitting, MATLAB, GMT, and building web pages. Throughout this course, data sets will be used from many different sub-disciplines in the Earth Sciences to learn different data processing, modeling, and imaging techniques.

  • SeisLab 3.0  new
Description: A set of more than 150 functions (plus support functions called by them) for analysis and display of exploration-seismic data and well logs. These functions read and write seismic data in standard SEG-Y format, read and write well logs in LAS-format 2.0 (also read LAS-format 3.0), and perform many of the manipulations usually performed on these data types. The functions come with a manual in PDF format and scripts with examples.

  • Structural Geology  new
Description: This class deals with ways to recognize and characterize major structures in the earth's crust and ways to gain insight into how these structures form. It also explores techniques for determining the sequence in which structures form. Geometric and timesequence information is integrated with fundamental material in mathematics and physics to introduce students to how the earth's crust can be viewed as a mechanical system. The class will focus on macroscopic structures but will also introduce students to some of the fascinating structures that form at the microscopic scale.
Course material created by Professor Steve Martel.
Target audience: Advanced undergraduate (3rd or 4th year)
Institution: University of Hawai'i at Manoa
Materials available: Lab materials, Course outline or syllabus
    Products: MATLAB
