Possibly the easiest ways is to use some software like &lt;br&gt;
Grads to convert the data and then read it into ML. Or &lt;br&gt;
to write a MEX interface to existing BUFR i/o libraries&lt;br&gt;
such as BUFRDC or EMOSLIB from ECMWF:&lt;br&gt;

If you take the latter path I would be interested in knowing how you get on. Incidentally, we did a similar thing for GRIB (and NetCDF), cf. &lt;br&gt;
