how to customize legend in Matlab plots

if I have the following plotting items in a graph: green circle, blue circle, red circle, green square, blue square, red square and would like to annotate my graph in the following way:

green -- textA
blue -- textB
red -- textC
circle -- textD
square -- textE

the command legend won't work like this. how can I implement it myself? Thanks for your hints.
