Hello Newsgroup

i have installed MATLAB on Ubuntu Linux.
But there is a problem with the installation.
When i type in matlab from the command prompt, MATLAB starts up & command window appears.
But the Standard Menu bar, Tool bar are NOT visible.
WHen i open the Editor, Figure window, Array Editor etc, the Standard Menu bar, Tool bar in these windows also are NOT visible. But when i dock the Editor, Figure window, Array Editor etc into the main window, the Standard Menu bar, Tool bar in these windows will become visible.

I don't understand what's happening.
Does anyone know what's going on & can suggest some solutions.
Please any help will be appreciated.

Thanks in advance

It semms that this issue is due to a bug in a video driver in Ubuntu.
Reading this solution may help you:
Why do I have issues with my MATLAB desktop on Ubuntu 9.04?
http://www.mathworks.com/support/solutions/en/data/1-A458TE/?solution=1-A458TE

Thanks for the reply. But the solution suggested in
http://www.mathworks.com/support/solutions/en/data/1-A458TE/?solution=1-A458TE

does not help. I still have problems with Matlab desktop, Editor window, figure window, array editor window.
The menu bars, toolbars etc on any of these windows are not visible, BUT if i click on the menu bar items, toolbar items, then relevant text/dialog box seems to pop-up.

But if i dock any of these windows, they become visible. If i undock them again, they become invisible .
I don't understand how this works.
I am using 32-bit Ubuntu 9.04
Hope somebody has an idea on how to resolve this issue.

Thanks in advance
I had similar issues with GUIs and just had to deactivate visual effects on windows to get it to work properly. More precisely:

Working on Matlab's GUIs might be problematic under Ubuntu (overlapping text boxes, black boxes everywhere, etc). If this is the case, deactivate any effect on windows: System -> Preferences -> Appearance -> Visual effects -> "None".

Try this:
for getting the toolbars
1. Open the executable Matlab script, ~/matlab/bin/matlab in gedit. 2. Copy and paste "export AWT_TOOLKIT=MToolkit" into the first line of the file.
3. Save the file. Close the terminal and restart.
The trick doesn't work anymore under 10.04. I get:
Failed to start the Desktop: Failure loading desktop class
Any other Ideas?
@Simon:
I got this to work on Ubuntu 10.04 by downloading the latest version of the Java JDK from SUN, then setting the MATLAB_JAVA environment variable to point to that directory.
