I have to ask, why are you all trying to run Matlab on an OS that is
largely unproven, highly software incompatible and takes a more
substantial portion of system resources?

I am unaware of what advantage Vista has that requires anyone to
install it at this time. Surely using XP means you get more value
from your hardware as less of it is devoted to run the OS?
