Choas, its clear to me you've never worked in a Software Produciton enviroment, based on these kind of reactions. as Scott was saying, ther eis always a trade off between fixxing bugs, implementing (user requested) changes, introducing new features,maintaining lagacy. A company with a product as widely used as MATLAB will most likely be working mainly on bug fixes and User requested changes. as for people not using / buying Microsoft products, thats a bad analogy. mainly becouse OEM'
ers dont give consumers (and companies) a whole lot of choice. tis there way or the high way. not so with the mathworks. if you have a need that The mathworks can fill, theat need can be filled also with opensource software. true you wont have a ready made solution. but it is possible.

you are as always intitled to your opion, but try not to thrust it down other peoples throat...
