some similar functions with same names already exist in Octave
(espesially in latest versions), just type fmin<TAB> and see
the list

I hope OpenOpt also will be ready for Octave soon (in some days) -
currently it consists of some global & 2 non-smooth solvers.
Unfortunately, only few his solvers are working in Octave now.
