Hi all.

I own a MACBook Intel core duo and today I installed Matlab 7.4 2007a

for intel Mac. Unfortunately I clicked on the Matlab icon and after a

few seconds of bounching, Matlab's loading stopped.

Does anyone know a remedy for this problem.

What, if any, error messages appeared in the Console?

http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=Mac/10.4/en/mh1629.html

If any did appear, I'd suggest searching our support database:

http://www.mathworks.com/support

or Apple's database:

http://www.apple.com/support/

or Google. If you can't find anything in those locations, contact Technical
Support and have the text of any messages from the Console ready to read to
support.

Dear Steven,

No messages appear on the Console.

The main window of Matlab simply doesn't start...

Hi Barthol,

Have you checked the System Requirements, and confirmed that you are
updated to Mac OS X 10.4.8 or later, and Java 1.5.0_07 or later?

You can check the Mac OS version by selecting About This Mac from the
screen Apple menu in the upper left corner, or by typing 'sw_vers' in
xterm or Terminal. You can check the Java version by opening xterm or
Terminal and typing 'java -version'.

Thanks,

Hi Brian,

Thanks for the post.

My Mac OS X is 10.4.9
My Java is 1.5.0_07

Should I update the Java?

Is anything else that I should check?

Hello,

If it helps, I'm having the exact same problem on my MacBook Pro.
I'm also at 10.4.9 and my java version is build 1.5.0_07-164).

I noticed that I can run in terminal mode with the -nojvm just fine,
but it freezing on the "Initializing" screen when I try to run it
normally.

I'm guessing that maybe there is a problem on the java side of
things?

Thanks,
John

I just encountered this same problem and got around it by updating
X11 to 1.1.3. The update should be available via Software Update.

Thanks for posting... I already had version 1.1.3 for X11. I tried
doing the upgrade again (in case it was broken for some reason) but
still had the same problem with the GUI for MATLAB. Still not sure
what is going on...

Hello everyone!

I'm having the exactly same problem. System:
- Macbook Pro 2.33Intel Core 2
- 2 GB RAM
- Java: 1.5.0_07
- Mac OS 10.4.9
- X11: Version 1.1.3

trying to run Matlab 7.4

I re-installed Matlab several times (since I didn't have X11 neither
Java on the latest versions) but it just won't work:

Behaviour is:

I start Matlab. X11 gets started. The Matlab-Lanucher bounces for a
couple of times and then quits.

One "thing" that might be a possible reason:
I found a file "launch_matlab.sh" in the "Start Matlab"-Package. In
here you find a case-handling that is looking for a directory
"bin/$ARCHITECTURE/......"
where $ARCHITECTURE is "maci" if the App is run on an intel machine.
However: there is no directory:
/bin/maci/
only
/bin/mac/
Maybe this is just nothing...but maybe it's also the solution and
then my Matlab-version that I recieved is not "usable"...

I'd be glad for any comments or hints to resolve this issue!

Mat

I have the same problem and although I posted it several times, none
of Mathworks worker gave a reply to it. I guess that, they also don't
know what's going on the Mac OSX side.

Ugh... same problem here. On a PPC Powerbook 1.25GHz, 1GB RAM.
Launcher bounces a couple of times in the dock, then disappears. If
I try to start matlab directly from the CLI in X11 using:

bin/mac/setsid bin/matlab -desktop -display :0.0

(the same line from launch_matlab.sh in the MATLAB Starter.app
package), then nothing happens; that is, I get the prompt back. No
hanging, no errors in the console.log or system.log, no crashes, etc.

Hi,

For some of the reported problems, I think Matthias has indicated one
root cause: the incorrect binary architecture is installed. If you are
running on an Intel-based Mac but have the PowerPC version installed, it
won't start, and vice versa.

If you are downloading then installing, make sure you are downloading
the correct architecture for your Mac ("Mac" is for PowerPC, "Intel Mac"
is for Intel-based Mac), and are installing the correct architecture.

If you are installing from DVD, you should not have a problem unless you
install from one Mac and run from another Mac of a different
architecture. The installer will install only the architecture it is
running on, not the architecture the installed MATLAB will run from, to
save on disk space. This is especially important for MacBook and
PowerBook users, where disk space is limited.

PowerPC versions of MATLAB don't run (well) under Rossetta (unless you
use -nojvm, due to a limitation that Java only runs native), so you must
have the native Intel Mac version of MATLAB R2007a to run on an
Intel-based Mac.

Let me know if this clears things up for some of the reported problems.

It is really interesting that, non of the Mathworks worker or system
engineers answer to the Intel Mac questions. And I'm sure that, they
also don't know why this problem occurs.

We answer those questions we can answer and that we want to answer, just
like everyone else on the newsgroup. If you want to ensure that you receive
an answer, contact Technical Support as I suggested earlier in this thread.

I also have similar problem on Intel Mac (10.4.9). In my case when I
try to run matlab from console, I get:

Finally working!!!
What I did was to update Java. In my system (Intel Mac, 10.4.9,
X11=1.1.3 ) there are to Java's so I updated them bought to the
latest version available by Software Update: J2SE 5.0 Release 4 and
Java for Mac OS X 10.4, Release 5.

My Java versio is already 1.5.0_07, but still problem

Hi all,

Unfortunately my java version is already 1.5.0_07.

The workaround (arguably not a good one) was to create a new account
for my self. Matlab worked perfectly fine in the new account (as well
as in the root account).

One users on this thread had the idea to call Technical Support -
which is the way I suggest for issues like that.

We found out that his IT provided him a MAC version for PPC and not
for the Intel Mac which was causing the issue.

I followed Andreas recommendation and I saw the light...!
I sifted through the archive of mathworks technical support. I found
a solution which lends itself perfectly to my problem (and hopefully
to yours). The solution is:

------------------------------------------------------
1. Open the Terminal Application (usually found in Applications or
Utilities).
2. Type "cd /Users/" and press Enter.
3. Type "ls" and press Enter. This will list the folders in this
directory. One of these folders relates to your username.
4. Type "cd <enter you username directory here>", then press
Enter.
5. From this directory you will need to remove your preferences
directory by typing the command "rm -rf .matlab/"
6. Start MATLAB again once this folder's contents have been removed.

------------------------------------------------------

As far as I understand the matlab preferences are stored into a
hidden file called .matlab which resides outside the main matlab
directory.

For some reason this .matlab file could not be updated properly when
I switched from 2007 beta to 2007a version. So it had to be deleted
and be recreated by starting matlab program again.

These steps don't solve my problem, although I can use Matlab 7.4 on

I have a Macbook and I used to have the same problem. The best
feasible and efficient workaround I came up with is the following
simple one:

1. Open X11 application.
2. Change to the MATLAB/bin directory (e.g. cd
/Applications/MATLAB74/bin).
3. Run sudo ./matlab
4. Enter your password.
5. MATLAB starts smoothly.

The problem is that java must be started from the ROOT user and not
your user, still when clicking on the matlab icon you start it as
your user, not the root (e.g. if you replace step 3 with $./matlab
then you will get a message about not having logged as root resulting
in java crash).

Presumably there might be a permanent solution to this java-related
problem, however this solution is a very fast and elegant way to run
matlab on your beloved mac-intel.

OK, this solution works quite well, thanks a lot.

So I have another question, I also created another user which is
Standard Type. Although it is "Standart" Matlab74 starts when I click
on the icon.

But my primary account, which is a "Admin" account has the problem of
starting Matlab74, when I click on the icon.

Do you know why?

How to update X11 1.1.1 to 1.1.3? I am actually not allowed to
install the 1.1.3 update, because the system tells me that I do not
need this update!

I have tried all of the other suggestions on this thread and nothing
seems to work. The matlab icon bounces a few times, X11 starts up and
nothing more happens. I have the following versions:
MacOSX: 10.4.9
Java: 1.5.0_07
X11: 1.1.1

Furthermore, I've noted that the license manager scripts do not seem
to be installed, at least not in their usual location (MATLAB74/etc),
and in fact I never got an option to "customize" the license manager
when I installed from the Matlab DVD. Not even if I follow the
instructions in the installation guide, that is: insert installation
disc -> paste license info -> deselect all items from install
list -> do I get the license manager window.

Any good ideas would be very helpful!!
Thanks!

Ok... problem solved.
I reinstalled X11 from the MacOSX installation disk (still version
1.1.1), and then reinstalled Matlab 2007a and now everything seems to
work just fine!

Thanks for the tips.

I had the same problem of all of you and Panagiotis' tip was the key
for me. Now I have just to solve the little problem that I can not
launch the MATLAB in the desktop but this seems to be much easier.

Thanks for such a nice and useful discussion

Hi,

It seems everybody got the right answer.
I have tried all the tips, but they didn't work yet.
I have the lastest versions:
MacOSX: 10.4.9
Java: 1.5.0_07
X11: 1.1.3

In my case, the console says:

Java for ppc cannot run in this configuration.
Please consult documentation.

My macbook is Intel Core 2 Duo. So maybe it's the reason.
But I still do not know how to fix that, since I did update Jave for
Mac OSX10.4 release 5.

Anybody can help me on that?

In my case I had problems with the java application of MATLAB, that
is, all the nice interface (like Ying)... but MATLAB was running in
the terminal and I could launch figures.

But my case was a little different, I was trying with MATLAB 7.3 and,
after a while, I realized that it is said in the box that it will not
work for intel mac.

I update to MATLAB 7.4 and everything seems to work now.

Jesús

I forgot to mention that I was also using MATLAB 7.3.
It looks like I'd better get a newer one.
Thank you Jesus for the information.

You know, all of these solutions seem to be pointing to the same
thing. These solutions seem similiar:
a) creating a new user (admin or standard) and installing MATLAB
2007a into it, then running it
b) starting MATLAB 2007a from the root user
c) deleting the ~/.matlab directory or some other directory of
preferences, then installing MATLAB 2007a and running it

Why do I say these sound similiar? It would appear that there are
some preferences (or some .plist file) being set somewhere which
either:
a) gets created for a new user
b) gets overwritten as the root user
c) gets recreated for the current user if they don't exist but
should.

I've tried moving my ~/.matlab directory with no success, so my guess
is that it's a preference file somewhere else...

As of 5/19/2007 this thread about problems loading MATLAB 2007a on
macs is second in the list in google when you type in 'matlab 2007a'.
This might make people at the Mathworks (arguably, good folks)
really keen to get this problem figured out..!

I had this problem for R2007b, and found a bug in the launch_matlab.sh file
in /Applications/MATLAB_R2007b/MATLAB R2007b/Contents .

FIX:
The line which reads:

    export DISPLAY = `ps auxww | grep $USER | egrep
'(Xauthority|/Applications/Utilities/X11.app/Contents/MacOS/X11 .*:[0-
9]+$)' | grep -v grep | sed 's/^.*\(:[0-9][0-9]*\)$/\1/'`

should actually read

    export DISPLAY=`ps auxww | grep $USER | egrep
'(Xauthority|/Applications/Utilities/X11.app/Contents/MacOS/X11 .*:[0-
9]+$)' | grep -v grep | sed 's/^.*\(:[0-9][0-9]*\)$/\1/'`

In other words, remove the spaces to the left and right of the equals sign.

DIAGNOSIS:
The error messages in Console which indicate you are having this problem
are:

Contents/launch_matlab.sh: line 33: export: `=': not a valid identifier
Contents/launch_matlab.sh: line 33: export: `:1': not a valid identifier

EXPLANATION:
This code tries to determine what the DISPLAY value is in order to connect
with the now running X11 server. If it fails to work, the script defaults to
:0.0, which works much of the time. But, for some users, the right value is
:1.0, and the bug is revealed.

You can determine which value of DISPLAY is needed by starting your X11 and
typing into the xterm which results "echo $DISPLAY".

Good luck!
