Hi,
I was using Matlab 6.5 on my laptop with Windows XP. After I upgraded
from XP to Vista, I can no longer open Matlab. I always get the
following error message "License Manager Error - 103. Terminal Server
remote client not allowed.....FLEXlm error: -103,577..."
I've tried to re-install, but no success.
Please help.
Thank you.
Henry.
I'm not sure, but I think you need Matlab 7.4 (Release 2007a) for Windows
Vista.
I think older versions don't support it.

I'm seeing this too. Other than upgrading to a newer version of
matlab, is there any way to handle this?

Hey Diego,
are you sure that version 7.1 (R14 sp3) works on Vista? Did you try
it? I'm asking because I tried to install it and I had problem with
the installer (empty list of available products), so I went back to
XP, but if you actually loaded it then I might try installing Vista
again. Did you use any special setting? Which version of Vista are
you using?
(my system: Apple Macbook Pro core duo, Win Vista Business, 1.5 GB
RAM)
Thanks,
Claude
yes im sure that the 7.1 R14 SP3 works.
i have a centrino duo 2 vista home premium, 1GB ram
no special configurations, just install it..

I have to ask, why are you all trying to run Matlab on an OS that is
largely unproven, highly software incompatible and takes a more
substantial portion of system resources?
I am unaware of what advantage Vista has that requires anyone to
install it at this time. Surely using XP means you get more value
from your hardware as less of it is devoted to run the OS?
Hello everyone, I am getting the exact same problem ( license manager
error -103) . Does anyone have ANY solution for this problem. I need
some help urgently. Please reply if you have solved your problem.
Thanks a lot
PS : The argument abt running on Vista is absurd since we dont have
much choice. Most laptops come only with vista. Though i do agree
that it is one of the most "troublesome" OS ive ever used...

Right. We should have all just stuck with Windows 3.1, since that
worked perfectly fine.
I wouldn't hold your breath on this one though. Mathworks is touting
the latest version with "...R2007a adds support for the Intel® based
Mac, Windows Vista, and 64-bit Sun Solaris SPARC platforms..."
Based on this I doubt they'll be releasing any fixes for this problem
on 6.5. I'm thinking we'll just have to bite the bullet and get the
new version.

HAHA... win 3.1 or just DOS. :)
I know that this reply is not worth 50 cent (another joke)
but the same goes for all replies in this forum.
it´s a DEAD END.
have nice day.

For one, I think TMW is being disingenuous here.
This type of error (licensing error) smells of intentional
obsolescence in an attempt to sell more software. Even if
it was unintentional, they are taking advantage of the
situation. It would be one thing if some feature in
WinXP that was required for Matlab to work disappeared
in the newer OS, but I doubt that is the case.
It shouldn't be that hard. I have software written
for WinXP that uses far more OS features than Matlab,
and it runs fine under Vista. (I even have a program
written in 1986 that still runs under Vista).
I also don't think it is a dead issue. The older
versions of Matlab are too useful to give up on them.
Many people have older versions and can't afford to
upgrade them. I have a current Matlab license, yet I
still sometimes use version 6.1 (yes, some things work
better in older versions). As Vista gets more and more
common, some motivated person will probably figure out
how to get older versions to run. (Hopefully they will
share it with us.)
I remember seeing programs that could cause one version
of Windows to masquerade as another. Perhaps something
like that would work?
Paul Mennen:
<SNIP unhappy about TMW's vista support policy...

paul,
i fully agree with your statements!
my <agree> was meant to be with respect to the dead-end comment
re the several complaints in this thread - simply alluding to the
fact that these were indeed somewhat futile given the fact that TMW
made it quite clear, which ML version is supported on the vista os
(the link)...

Right-click on the .EXE file for any program choose Properties, then
Compatibility. Check the box that says "Run this program in
compatibility mode for:" and choose an older version of Windows from
the drop-down. Your options go all the way back in time to Windows
95.
Not sure if it works, because I don't even have the chance to install
Matlab 6.5 under Vista.

Not know if anyone was able to get their Matlab 7.1 working
on vista yet, but here are some solutions.
====== Solution #1 ====================
(Make sure you have enabled viewing of hidden files and
folders first)
1. Browse to the folder C:\Users\<your
username>\AppData\Roaming\
2. Remove the directory named "MathWorks"
3. Once this has been removed, restart MATLAB. This
directory will be recreated the next time you start MATLAB.
=====================================
If that does not work, please try the following:
====== Solution #2 ====================
This problem may be resolved by changing the Compatibility
Mode in the MATLAB short cut icon.
1. Right click on the MATLAB icon, choose properties then
go to the "Compatibility" tab
2. Check the box "Run this program in Compatibility Mode
for:" (if it is not checked). Set this field to "Windows
2000 or Windows XP". Press OK to save the changes.
3. Try to start MATLAB again.
=====================================
If this fails, change the compatibility back to the previous
setting. Start MATLAB using the following flags:
====== Solution #3 ====================
1. Right click on the MATLAB icon and choose properties.
2. Go to the end of the "Target" line, after MATLAB.exe, and
add the '-nodesktop' flag

Virtual PC is quite good in that the VM can share resources
with the full PC, including disks and network. Even sound
replay works (after a fashion). You can suspend and restore
the VM quite quickly, so you don't need to reboot it each
time you want to run MATLAB. Virtual PC is free, but of
course you do need a copy of XP.
I'm working with R13. Tried "solutions" 1-3 from Donald,
but no luck.
Virtual PC seems to work.. thanks for the heads-up on
that. For anyone else going down that path, you'll need an
install CD for the 2nd operating system you plan to run
(i.e., WinXP via VirtualPC).
I agree Vista is a piece of trash, but its forced down our
throats like any good Microsoft product. My brand new
laptop uses all its resources just to run the OS... I
wonder how much faster it would process stuff in MATLAB
using DOS !
One would also think that "Compatibility Mode" would work
in this case.
One other note with VirtualPC/MATLAB.... It runs EXTREMELY
slow.
I think I've optimized resources for Virtual PC as much as
I can, but its so slow that typing is painful, so I can't
imagine this will be a permanent solution for actually
processing data.
There are many ellaborate solutions posted here on this
page. I seem to remember running into this issues a while
back and the compatability thing seemed to work.
There's another problem now though... so if the
compatability thing worked for you - great! but look out
for this one too...
I'm running Matlab 6.5 it *just* stopped working.
I finally tracked the problem down to something in the
Internet Explorer 7 install (or perhaps in recent automatic
security patches).
In any case, I uninstalled IE7, restarted the computer and
Matlab worked again.

Wow, so I read this whole string while I was installing v7
because I had not been able to start v6.5 (I assumed that
was just too old and just gave up).
Started the program in compatibility mode as admin and it
didn't work...as I expected. But I did happen to catch two
words in the error message as it quickly flashed on the
screen: "Java" and "Border".
Java...well who gives a damn about Java...I ignored it.
Border: I thought, hmm every old program seems to hate
vista's Aero visual style, so I first clicked in the
shortcut's properties' compatibility tab "disable visual
themes", still didn't work...
Finally I went and changed the whole theme manually to
"Windows Classic" and SUCCESS!! it actually worked.
In fact, it will start even if the theme is the only thing
you change, with some errors it will print first, but these
can be eliminated by simply right clicking on the shortcut
and selecting "Run as Administrator"
Still have no idea if this works with 6.5 but unfortunately
I am sure the other error message was very different but I
guess its worth a try.

and selecting "Run as Administrator"
Still have no idea if this works with 6.5 but unfortunately
I am sure the other error message was very different but I
guess its worth a try.
In order for your system to work with older versions of
MATLAB, simply change the windows theme to "Windows
Classic". This should fix the problem--it did for me.

Did this apply to version 7 and higher. It didn't work for
me using 6.5.

This is a good idea anyway. When you change your Visual
Effects preferences in XP to "Best Performance", it pretty
much changes it to Windows Classic for you.
I got 6.5 working on my vista laptop by having it connect to
my campus's network license manager which verifies that the
6.5 compatibility problem is completely within the license
manager. Unfortunately, if I had internet everywhere, I
wouldn't need a copy of Matlab on my laptop at all so this
is still pretty useless to me. I thought it might help
others or in pressuring for a patch though.
