I just had the same problem. Prior to it happening, the command entry
window had "dissappeared", either by human error or on its own. So we
had to restart Matlab, and the problem you describe began. Have you
found a way out of it?

checked the support page, there is a fix, that you have
to buy or a workaround, below is copy and paste of what
they say

Summary
Startup exception sometimes appears for MATLAB

Description

Upon starting MATLAB, a dialog box sometimes appears
displaying the following error message:

java.lang.NullPointerException
at
com.mathworks.mwswing.desk.DTNestingContainer$TreeState.fin
dSubTree(DTNestingContainer.java:1840)
at
com.mathworks.mwswing.desk.DTNestingContainer.getPreviousLo
cation(DTNestingContainer.java:765)
. . .
MATLAB then exits.

This occurs if during the previous MATLAB session you
closed or undocked all the tools within the main desktop
frame, including the Command Window, and then exited
MATLAB.

Fix
This bug was fixed as of R2006a.

If you have a current subscription to MathWorks Software
Maintenance Service (SMS), you can download product
updates. If not, learn more about MathWorks SMS.

Workaround
If you are using a previous version, please read the
following:

Delete the file MATLABDesktop.xml from the MATLAB
preferences directory (the directory returned when you run
prefdir). To avoid recurrence, keep one tool open in the
desktop before exiting MATLAB.

I have the same problem like everybody who had written it

that I don't have .NET framework, so I installed it and
that after I have to reinstall matlab. I did it, but the
result is still same :-(

This is the end of the struggle. No need to reinstall.

Windows:

Look for a file called MATLABDesktop.xml
Delete it.
Done.

Mac OS X

Use The Start Matlab Setting application and select terminal (or X11) on the left menu.
Enable shell start (no Desktop) and remove the JVM flag.
Start.
Once you get the matlab prompt type: prefdir
the shell will show you something like:
/Users/nameuser/.matlab/R2008a
go there and delete MATLABDesktop.xml
Done.

Cheers Bro.

I too had a hard time trying to fix it. First, I tried the Work Around given here, i.e., set a new environment variable MATLAB _RESERVE_LO to a value 0 which didn't work and then tried restoring my desktop visuals which fixed it. But then again, I'm not sure what fixed it...is it the new environment variable or restoring my desktop.

I have the same problem as everyone on this list: I have installed Matlab R2007a on a Windows 7, and whenever I try to open Matlab, I get the error message:
"Error Starting Desktop" java.lang.NullPointerException ... etc. The only way I can open Matlab is right after installation, by checking the "Start Matlab" box on the installer.
I tried doing what you suggested: looking for a file called MatlabDesktop.xml and deleting it. However, I cannot find this file on my computer. I have checked my Matlab preferences folder (by typing "prefdir" in my Matlab session), but there is no file called "MatlabDesktop.xml" in that folder. There is a PICS file called "matlab" and a text file called "MLintDefaultSettings".
There is an XML file called "shortcuts". I tried deleting that file, but 1) this didn't solve the problem at all; I got the same error message, and 2) after I got this error message, the "shortcuts.xml" file reappeared in my Matlab preferences folder.
What should I do? Thank you very much for your consideration.

Yours Sincerely,
Maxim Pinkovskiy

This problem arises when you try to use version 7.1 on Windows 7 OS.

If you are attempting to run 7.1 on Windows 7 a quick work around is to:

1. Right-click on the desktop.
2. select personalise.
3. scroll till you can see basic and high contrast themes.
4. select the theme "Windows Classic".
5. Run Matlab.

The problem, as far as i can tell from the error messages I have gotten, is that Windows 7 does not support the Java files that Matlab uses in its GUI and as such won't start. By switching to the Windows Classic theme it enables these GUI objects to be loaded.

Matlab installs it's own version of Java which is outdated and incompatible with newer themes. Simply follow the instructions at the following link to fool matlab into accepting a newer version of Java.

I have windows 7 and 7.1 matlab version.
I had the same problem described but even when I did this:
Go to <Matlab-installation-dir>\sys\java\jre\win32 you will find a folder named jre1.5.0_07 (or a similar version). Rename it to Original_<whatever was originally there>
Go to C:\Program Files\Java you will find file named jre6. Copy it to <Matlab-installation-dir>\sys\java\jre\win32 and rename it to <original jre directory name>

or when I change my desktop to windows classic it goes on giving the error. what can I do?

Dear All,

I've got the solution.....

1) Install latest version of the JDK compiler on your computer.
2) Copy the "jre1.6.0_13" folder from "C:\Program Files\Java" directory.
3) Goto the "C:\MATLAB7\sys\java\jre\win32" folder.
4) Paste the "jre1.6.0_13" folder to that directory.
5) Rename the existing "jre1.4.2" folder to "_jre1.4.2".
6) Rename the "jre1.6.0_13" folder to "jre1.4.2".
7) Now you can delete "_jre1.4.2" folder.
8) Run MATLAB.EXE

Enjoy and work with Matlab7 in Windows 7

This fix does allow you to run Matlab, however I have noticed there are certain GUI functions that still do not function properly while using a Windows 7 Aero theme as opposed to Windows Classic. For example, the function "inputdlg" is a simple way to input text to a variable, but in the Windows 7 Aero theme environment the text box field is not shown. Any ideas on how to bring this into view??

Looks like the default location of the MATLABDesktop.xml is in your C:\users\%username%\AppData\Roaming\MathWorks\MATLAB\R14SP3\ folder.

I have checked my Matlab preferences folder (by typing "prefdir" in my Matlab session), but there is no file called "MatlabDesktop.xml" in that folder. There is a PICS file called "matlab" and a text file called "MLintDefaultSettings".
