What does Matlab cost ?

I've been wondering about the Matlab
price policy.

In Germany, Matlab is very (almost
prohibitively) expensive. A PC licence
costs 4600 DM and toolboxes are between
1050 DM and 2300 DM each. This is a lot
of money, especially for a budget strained
government organisation.

Is Matlab as expensive elsewhere ?

Thanks,

Carl.

I think in the USA it is not so expensive. But even if it were so much
cheaper there, you can't order in the USA. When you try to order Matlab
directly at Mathworks they refer to the german distributor. So, you
can't get a legal, cheap copy of Matlab.

One of the main disadvantages of Mathworks price policy is that there
exist only educational and industrial prices. So if you don't work at
the university it is supposed that you earn money with Matlab
(industrial price). For example, it is not longer possible with version
5 to install my Matlab version under Linux from the university at home
to do some of my calculations there. The cheap student version is of no
help in this case. Although some of the constraints (matrix size) have
been somewhat relaxed, the student version is still crippled. Mathworks
should take Waterloo Maple Software as an example. They have very
attractive offers for there product (student prices for fully functional
versions).

What are the differences in the student and full versions?

We've just bought Matlab for $1900 Canadian dollars. That's a lot of
money. We based our choice on the performance of the software and
also on the fact that Matlab is use in some large universities around
here and it's easy to find people who know the language. However, I
agree that it's unaffordable for personal use.

I agree -- either your German distributor has a high markup or Mathworks
charges whatever they feel the market will bear -- not uncommon in
corporate pricing policies.

I felt similarly a while back when the cost of Mercedes was more in $$
then it was in DMs in Germany.

Having said that, I got my moneys worth, something, judging from this
group, Matlab owners do NOT...

We paid much, but a lot less than German users:
november 1996 prices for PC versions were:
about 1400 NLG ($700) for PC MATLAB and about 600 NLG for a
PC toolbox. We get educational prices, though. Although MATLAB
is expensive, it is worth the money in our case. I would like
them to be nicer to their customers though: you get almost no discount
when you buy more than one copy. I wanted a PC copy while I
already owned a workstation copy (which is more expensive). I asked
for discount: no dice!

Greetings, Bob
