Does anyone know how to open a context menu by left
clicking on a pushbutton in a gui as opposed to right
clicking. I want my context menu to open after clicking
one of the toolbar buttons but i'm not sure how. any help
would be greatly appreciated

Jason,

~ Create a uicontextmenu for the figure.
~ In the callback routine for the toolbar button -
   cm = findobj('tag','yourmenutag');
   hpos = get(gcbo,'Position'); % this must be in pixels
   set(cm,'Visible', 'on', 'Position',[hpos(1) hpos(2)]

~ You can ofcourse adjust the position by adding/subtracting
to the Position vector. The default position for context
menu is otherwise [0 0]

~ The menu gets dismissed if you click anywhere else on the
figure.
