Hello MATLAB Community!

Now that the Newsreader has been up for a while, I thought
it would be fun to talk about Watch lists – the
functionality which keeps you in touch with MATLAB Central
conversations. Watch lists allow you to focus on what you
think is interesting: threads, people, word strings, tags,
etc etc.

For each watch you set, you indicate when you want to be
notified: “immediately”, “daily digest” or “never”.
- “Immediately” sends the message to you as email as soon as
they have been received in the Newsreader.
- “Daily-digest” consolidates all the messages relating to
this watch into a single message each day.
- “Never” assumes that you prefer to monitor your watch
either through your Newsreader or using an RSS feed

Watches are easy for you to setup.
- If you are reading a discussion thread, there are a couple
of opportunities to watch for more discussions. The thread,
itself, has a link at the top of the thread. Click on “Add
thread to My Watch List” and set your delivery preferences.
Each message in the thread that you are reading also has a
link “Add author to My Watch List”. If you find the points
and ideas made by this author, you might want to follow
other points he/she makes. This makes it easy for you to
lurk or participate in interesting other threads! As an
example, check out the threads that Matt Simoneau is
watching by going to his profile at
http://www.mathworks.com/matlabcentral/newsreader/author/16231.
- When you post a message, you have the option to set a
watch on your own thread. Just click on the link “Add this
thread to my newsreader watch list” in order to be notified
when people respond to your posting. (If you don’t click on
this link, you will not receive any notification when people
respond to your thread.
- When replying to a message, the same link appears. Again,
click on this option in order to receive notification of
future replies to this thread.

Which mode you select is dependent upon your own personal
workflow and preferred tool. It also helps you in
prioritizing topics since important things can come to you
immediately, while things less important may wait until the
Daily Digest. If you wish to change your delivery settings,
or if you decide that you want to stop watching something on
your list, go to your Newsreader profile to make these changes.

So, I hope, now that you have made it through my ramblings,
that the Watch list addition catches you as well! I’d love
to hear feedback on how you are using this tool, what your
favorite watches are, and, if you are watching via RSS feed
– what feedreader are you using? If you are looking for a
place to start, my favorite watches right now are mlc tips,
undocumented, admin, and Simulink, or try some of Matt’s
links from his profile linked above.

As always, please feel free to contact me at any time if you
have any questions, comments or feedback. Thanks for being
part of our MATLAB Central Community!

Best wishes,
Helen
