As best I recall, winopen is not a matlab command, and as best
I recall, matlab does not provide any command with the
functionality requested. Possibly the functionality could be
achieved in Matlab by using the Java interface.

I seem to recall that winopen is an MS Windows command, which
on an MS Windows system would have to be invoked in Matlab by using
the matlab system() or dos() commands. We do not, however, have
any information available in the original question to suggest
that MS Windows is in use or that a system-specific solution was
being sought, so baring possible future clarification from the
original poster, we should restrict our provided solutions
to those which are portable to all platforms that Matlab is supported
on.

Nope.

If you wanted to do this on Windows without using WINOPEN, you can just use
SYSTEM or DOS with the name of the file to be opened. Windows will, if the
extension of the file is one it has associated with a program, know what to
do with the file.

In the absence of any platform information from the OP, my response would
be:

If you're using Windows, try WINOPEN. If you're not, the answer will depend
on what system you're on and what programs you have available. In the
general case, you'll need to use SYSTEM; if there's a specific file type
you're working with, let us know and we'll suggest a solution for that type
if one exists.
