Thread Subject: Matlab will not launch, Intel Mac + Leopard

Just loaded R2007b on Intel dual Mac running Leopard and it
will not launch. Icon pops up (w/ X11) & bounces. After 10
sec or so both stop bouncing but that's it. X11 is vers
1.1.3. Java is ver 1.5

It might be your X11 version. I just installed Leopard and
X11 2.0 that came with it. After a reboot it works okay.

Installed X11 vers 2.0.1 and now Matlab quits directly upon
opening yielding the following error report:

Hi,

That sounds like an incomplete install of MATLAB. Try removing MATLAB
and re-installing.

I'm having the same problem. My first mac so i'm slightly stumped.

I'm using leopard and i'm on x11 ver 2.0.

I read somewhere that only specific installations of matlab will work
on the new intel based macs?

Did complete reinstall as Brian suggested and got the same
error report...

Let's troubleshoot:

- does the bin/maci directory contain a library
   libboost_filesystem-1_33_1.dylib? If it does not,
   then the MATLAB install is incomplete. If it does,
   something may be wrong with the file; continue:
- what does 'file libboost_filesystem-1_33_1.dylib' return?
   If it does not return this:
   "Mach-O dynamically linked shared library i386"
   then the file is incomplete. If it does, something else
   is causing trouble; continue:
- Is the file size around 70K? (Use ls -l, or Get Info).
   If it is significantly smaller, then the file is
   incomplete. If it is around 70K, continue:
- what does 'nm libboost_filesystem-1_33_1.dylib' return?
   If it does not return a ton of symbols, then the file
   is incomplete. If it does, then I'm stumped.

For what it's worth, sometimes incomplete archives will install
"correctly" but still do not produce a valid installation. If this is a
web download, or a copied installer, you may need to re-download the
installer files, or install from the original DVD.

I recently installed Leopard and upgraded to 10.5.1, on
an iMac (2.16 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo), then installed
Matlab R2007b, and Matlab runs just fine.
I had a problem with printing Matlab graphics which was solved
(see other thread on this list).

Are you using 10.5.1?

No no, you don't want to try to execute the file -- it's a library. You
want to run the unix file program with the library as the argument, like
so:

$ cd /Applications/MATLAB_R2007b/bin/maci
$ file libboost_filesystem-1_33_1.dylib
libboost_filesystem-1_33_1.dylib: Mach-O dynamically linked shared
library i386

It's at 80 KB.

I'm a complete novice at using OS X Unix commands, but I'm
getting only "command not found" when I try to get nm ... to
 return something.

Is there a chance that X11 is a problem? It's not bouncing
on the dock when I attempt to open matlab..

Have been experiencing the same problem!

Originally, after double-clicking the Matlab icon, it would start
correctly. Then it doesn't work anymore.
I verified it's a clean & complete install.

It appears to be some kind of search path problem, or related
to launching X11. If I use StartMatlab
(/Applications/MATLAB_R2007b/bin/maci/StartMATLAB.app)
it works just fine.

On further note:

Did you guys MANUALLY create your Matlab dock icon,
or drag the one in /Applications/MATLAB_R2007b/bin/maci/MATLAB.app
onto the dock?

When I drag&drop the "Matlab 7.5" icon from
/Applications/MATLAB_R2007b/MATLAB 7.5,
it resolves to the "StartMatlab" script and everything works fine...

I came across this thread tonight while searching for a
solution to the very same problem - brand new Macbook,
10.5.1 preinstalled, brand new installation of Matlab 7.5.
This thread didn't fix the problem (obviously), but I came
across a workaround elsewhere: Open X11 first, then open
the Matlab icon referenced above. It seems to work so far.
 Any idea why this is and how to just make it work like it
should?
