Important parts of JPEG2000 are patented. Some of the patent holders have
granted free licenses for use of their technologies, but some of the patent
holders have not. When I looked at this point a couple of weeks ago, I did not
find any list of what was freely usable and what was not. If you are not able to
find the information, then I suggest that you retain an intellectual property
lawyer (if your purpose in programming is to create a commercial or distributable
program), or that you turn the patent matter over to your instructor (if
your purpose in programming is for course work or academic project.)
