This is not a nuts and bolts Matlab question, but I would
like to get the communities response to the following.

Recently, I have been helping the IT person who manages my
group's Matlab licenses to understand the new activation
process and how it will affect us. In our discussions with
TMW, one of the representatives we spoke with indicated
that we would be able to activate a given license on 4
computers or less. Prior to 2008a it has been my
understanding that there was not a limit to the number of
computers that a license may be installed on. When I
stated this to the representative, I was told that this was
not the case, and that the 4 computer limit has been part
of the agreement in earlier releases, however unenforceable
it may be. I have looked through the license agreement for
multiple versions of Matlab and the only clause that I can
find that might indicate this 4 computer limit is in the
Installation and Use Addendum in point 5.1.Standalone Named
User:

"Programs may only be installed and operated on one or more
individual, standalone computers, provided the Programs are
only accessible to, and operated by, the Named User(s) for
that License. Network installation is prohibited. The
locations of the standalone computers used by the Named
User to run the Programs are not limited; the computers may
be located at work, home, laboratory, or on a laptop.
Licensee may only..."

Specifically the line which names 4 acceptable locations:
work, home, lab and laptop.

Has anyone else run into this 4 computer limit prior to
2008a? If so could you point me to the appropriate portion
of the Software License agreement?

Thank you.

Justin

I just sent an email complaining about this to support. At
my desk (at work) I have 3 different computers and one
virtual machine. I also have a laptop and a home computer.
On all of these machines, I am the only person that would
be using Matlab (or in most cases the only person that would
be using the computer period).

Under the old licensing scheme this was okay. However with
the new licensing scheme, this is apparently too many
computers to install on.

To me this is a major step back. Restricting the use of the
license to "Named User" is not a problem, but the strict
installation limitations certainly not a welcome change.
