I am considering to buy a powerful computer to run Matlab/Simulink. I read that
from 2007a, multicore processors are supported. How is the performance
improvement on Quadcore and 8-core machines over the the Intel Core2Duo?
To allow more than 4G memory, I need to use a 64-bit OS. Which OS do you
recommend? From previous postings, it looks like some users have problems on
Windows XP 64 bit systems. Also, does a Mac Pro running the Linux/Windows
versions of Matlab performs better than its PC counterparts? Thanks.

Only some of the underlying libraries are multi-threaded (ie FFTW and
uBLAS) so for the most part your development will be in a single
thread. So i would recommend a faster Core2Duo (3.2 Ghz +) over a
slower quad or even oct core.

As for 64-bit OS. I've only had experience running Matlab under 64-bit
Ubuntu. So I cant compare it with any othe r64 bit OS. Possibly you
should google for some 'matlab bench 64 bit' and see what pops up! (ie

I run the 64Bit version of Matlab on a 64Bit Win xp Quad
Core with 16G of RAM.
Matlab seems not to be able to take advantage of any more
memory on my 64Bit system than it had on the 32Bit. I can't
build any larger matrix with the 64Bit system than with the
32Bit system. Disappointing to say the least, as I bought
this machine to run COMSOL and Matlab. Only COMSOL uses the
full 16G of RAM.

Also, if you're buying toolboxes, be careful of 64 bit platforms.
We went all out last tear, with dual dual-core 64-bit CPU's on two
machines. Then found out Instrument Control tbx doesn't work under XP64!

In the case of Mac Pro, one can choose between a QuadCore CPU or two
QuadCore CPUs. Does that mean having the extra CPU will not have noticeable gain in performance?

Wow. I hope this isn't true. Matlab cannot address into
16GB in a 64/64/64 setup? Jeez I just ordered 35k worth of
64-bit workstations. Tell me it ain't true Mathworks!

It's not true. See this technical note:
