running scripts and working with Excel

I am running Matlab scripts that take a long time and
access Excel files. More often than not, when I open up an
Excel file while the script is being run (not even the
Excel file that the script is using), Matlab stops running
the code and gives an error. However, there is no error at
the line in the m-file where it specifies and it will run
smoothly if I don't open any Excel files. Does anyone have
a solution to this? If not, is there a way to get matlab to
continue executing a code mid-way (this seems difficult to
do if it is in the middle of a loop).
