does anyone know how to make a pre-emphasis filter?
my source says it has a formula of H(z) = 1-az^-1

where a is empirically equal to 1.

does anyone know how to code this?

Use
y = filter(b,a,X);

for you case:
a=1;
b=[1-1]

Beacause if H(z) is impule responce image then Y(z)=H(z)*X(z)
