I noticed that as of Matlab R2009a, Mathworks has discontinued support for the integrated emacs editor for Matlab via EmacsLink. Is anybody else out there upset about this? Being an emacs user, EmacsLink was a very productive way for me to crank out m-file code. Now, I have to decide whether to learn the matlab editor or use the simpler matlab-mode available from the file exchange which doesn't include debugging integration, M-Lint, and so forth.

What are you all using to develop your code? Does anyone know if there are plans to bring back emacs integration again?

I already asked but got no real answer on this topic. Yes I am upset
too, lack of debugging ability is really hard to overcome.
Before integration of the debugger, I used to write inside Emacs and
debug inside the editor. Yet, this is really becoming an issue, which
is why I am still sticking to the 2008 releases (though I will have to
switch soon anyway I guess).

Too bad we cannot get any official answer on this.

This is ridiculous!
This completely destroys the way I operate in Matlab and encourages me to migrate away from Matlab in general.

given the reduced emacs support, I'll stick to the old Matlab then and try find time to get into GNU Octave

I noticed that one of the MathWorks blogs described the removal of this functionality in their latest post, you may want to comment about it here:

Yeah, another highly disappointed customer here. I've been using
EmacsLink for many years (and matlabshell before that if you know it).

Don't know if there's much we can do. Guess it's good to at least
make some noise about it. Anyone else?

Yeah, I don't know if octave is really a realistic solution yet. I
took a look just now, there's a new version out, and sounds like it
has some good emacs support, and graphics are getting better. Still a
lot of functionality I think I'd miss from Matlab though. It might be
fine for those tasks that don't require much from the toolboxes. Has
anyone out there had luck with switching over completely? We use
Matlab a lot at our small (50-person) R&D company. I'm wondering, a
couple years down the road .. we'll probably have moved beyond R2008x
so no more EmacsLink, and octave will continue to progress. It might
be worth starting to write my code so it'll work in octave so that
down the road I can make the transition, or at least do some of my
work in an environment that supports emacs integration...

No need to downgrade Matlab, the old EmacsLink works fine the new Matlab versions. I still use the 2007b version of EmacsLink with Matlab 2009b. Just find an old EmacsLink and make it run the new Matlab executable.

Well unless you have just witnessed a miracle, that can't be true I'm afraid.
Can you execute cells in R2009b from within emacs ? Can you debug from within emacs too ?
I will only believe what I see.... Post a video and I will start believing it !
