Interesting empty cell display alignment

It seems like if I assign empty numeric to a bunch of initialized (or expanded) cells, the empty [] cell I assigned is shifted to the left by one character space. Can MATLAB tell the difference between a cell that's assigned empty or initialized empty? More interesting, is there a value to exploit this information?

>> x=cell(3,1)

x =

>> x{2,1}=[]

x =
