"what matfun/trace" is an example in "help partialpath"?

I think you may have misunderstood. matfun/trace is a valid partial path to the M-File trace.m, but the 'what' command looks for a directory. The output you are seeing means that there is no directory named trace which is a sub-directory of the matfun directory.

Try:

which matfun/trace

The 'which' command looks for M-Files and accepts the partial path to the file trace.m
