Subject: How to select an object and capture its instant coordinates from a video signal?

I want to get the X-Y coordinates for a point selected in a video image, and actualize that coordinates, say, every delta_T. In other words, I want to register the coordinates for the trajectory of that point inside the video signal, for example, a ball. I know this is possible, but I don't know where to start

Any ideas?
